The bands of Karate Church

Last week David Zhang hosted a punk rock show in his 1889 built church. It became known as the Karate Church in the 70’s when purchased by Duane Sammons to use as his Dojo to teach Karate. Now it is owned by David who has spent thousands to build the church building back up to code so he could host events for the public, run an alternative library, and a teaching center for the community.

This show we went to was pretty bonkers. This was a show in July my buddy Brendan took me to it. The performers were from Texas, Florida, and one band from China too. I’m not gonna pretend to be as in the scene as others so I brought pulled pork and a couple bottles of sake to share with the bands to bridge the gap.

The Boleys

A long haired group of indie rockers from Texas. They were pretty musically complex, blending styles of old school rock, grunge, and some Pink Floydy type riffs to create a great intro for the bands.

 Chump

This band got people going, everybody jumped in and started a playful mosh. I got pushed around and pushed back. One guy was a little too silly and splashed his beer on me. Not cool man.

Round Eye

These guys had a broader appeal than chump. They were a little jazzy, a little rock, and a lot of cool vibes. They’re anti commie, pro China white dudes who expatriated to China where they live. Some of their best songs aren’t on Spotify, which sucks but check out their bandcamp.

Muppet Fetish

Our own local brand of punk that’s rocked Bellingham since 2007. Has more of a Black Flag feel in that you might find lyrics like “rape murder pillage.” Harder energy and you definitely got to see them if you live here.

The Dead coats

They had some of the coolest merch. Their hats were dope and I wish I bought one but whenever I’m feeling drunk and ready make a purchase I hold myself back. These guys gave me hard Lost Boys vibe, the lead even kind of looked like Keifer Sutherland.
